Evaluation question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you learnt from it to the full product?

I believe sine completeing my full product i have learned so much but i think the most apparent would have to be that i have learnt how to make a good quality and stylish title sequences, moreover we learnt how to make good titles.

In the prelimary task we on knew how to fade in and outthe title and could just about strech as far as to changing the colour. When we were designing the title we had a lot more insight and were much more comfortable with the software. I found that using tutorials signifcantly helped, our final title I put different layer in 3D space helping to create an amazing effect and represented the production company.

Since creating our preliminary task we has improved our camerawork using equipment suchas the tripod was no longer a problem as we have become comfortable with the equipment. Also we had becoming me daring with the angles and whilst maintain different and daring camera angle they were also a lot me steady

Evaluation question 6

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 help me significantly to achieve the look that I thought we needed to get our final prject just how we wanted it. we also then used photoshop which I was resonably familar with I think that both programme have help me to learn new skills one of the biggest one was patience because sometimes you have to wait and be patient watching tutorials to get the look you want.

After effects was the next prgamme that we used this I personally believe allowed us to take our ideas much further and to do thing which you would think only proffesionals could do, after effects for our group was core and was how we created the silhouette effect for our title sequnce. Both affect effects and premiere pro are adobe progamme meaning that it was easy to import over footage either way.

We also used various social networking sites these helped our group to communicate we we were not physcially together and help us share information or new ideas inspired by something we may have stumbled across. Also websites such as facebook helped us to gain feedback from our audience.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

First the audience comment on our logo and said that it was very good as it looked gritty and dull match the title sequence's genre. Our establishing shot some people once they saw our title sequence notice at this point we did not have one and said that our establishing shot allowed was very creative but then a minority were saying that it seem to un realistic and the city was to rectanglar but we decided that as it appeal to the majority it would appeal more if we left it as it was but then to make it more realistic we added rain to the establishing shot. In the first two frames we are introduced to the two protagonist, the audience mostly commented on the female and said instantly you can tell she will be very sexy, there bad comments were that they never knew the relevance, but then we decided this was beneficial as it meant that we keep mystery in the title sequence. In the third and fourth frame we see each the character walking acroos both alone this connotes that they maybe more similar then they think. In the fifth frame we see the male protagonist smoking a cigar leaning back this shows the executive and shows the audience that he is an authority figure. In the sixth frame we see the to protagonist hold each showing the realtionship between the characters, a comment made was the audience wants to find out more about the characters. In the seventh frame the male protagonist is seen to be following a female character almost like a stalker would, and the comment made was that you are confused and want to know more about the male protagonist. The end frame is the title swerving toward the audience, the audience liked and said the splatter look extremely good. Overall we target are audience by looking at there comments and trying to meet there demands

Evaluation question 4

Who would be the target audeience for your media product?

Our target audience would be those who are 15 and over this is because they are not more aware of real scenarios and can understand some of the adult themes in the movie. By this is mean the character uses his the sexual charm to get the women which can be understood by someone of these ages. the character both a use different ways to kill a people and it can be undestand by our target audince that this is not to be copied whereas a younger target audience may not understand this.

These are just some of the typcial youth which my movie would be targeting.

Our target audience offer a very young fashion sense who shop in affordable shops the style is define be there social group as the youth are reliant on the clothes to define who they are. they like to go out and have fun on the weekends and are looking fro things that people of an older would do could they don't want to be young any more. the music will vary but is generally rock. pop, R'n'B and hip hop. Tv and social networking sites are my target audiences general media consumption and hen it come to tv they like something that is never drawn out to keep the attention funny in part and thrillers and horrors as they keep them alert.

Maslow's hierachy

Maslow's hierachy is a theory about what makes us motivatied and this help us develop our own movie. We were unable to provide the basic need which are food, water air etc and certainly not security. Love and belonginess is not really achieve love is touched upon as the two protagonist have wierd realationship were they will show true feelings for each other this realtionship can make the audience apprieciated the love own that they have in there lives. self esteem is also slightly touched upon as it lets the audience aspire to live the life of the young but highly sucessful protagonist. Our product definately does hit some of the peak of the hierachy with the escapism that is created for the audience by the movie allow the audince to be be creative and even touches on playfulness but it allowing the audience to run away with the movie.

Evaluation question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our production company is called Half moon productions which is known for producing horror movies. Our production company is slowly expand to hybrid movies. For our production we did much research into who would distribute movies similar to are and found hammer film productions this was because they have a good strong foundation in thriller movies so will understand our types of movies.

For a reliable distribution company we have chosen Hammer film production, as in its early years it was mostly associated with thrillers and other Gothic genre films. This is good for us as our movie is an action thriller so we need someone who understands the market. Hammer Film production has helped distribute films such a Dracula, nightmare, the rude awakening and more. Although these were the early years of the mid 1950’s the company have been sold to Big Brother creator John de mol. He has announced to spend $50m (£25m) on new horror films.

Our film would be distributed to cinemas globally, as the film content is modern and most MEDC’s will be able to relate or be entertained by it. We will apply to class our movie as British once this is done we can apply for grants from the UK film council also we will use advertise and sponsorship to give our movie the most money available to produce the best movie. we will release our movie in the a holiday period as it we parents and teenagers come off hopefully allowing us to be as successful as possible in our box office weekend. distribution within London is where we will start and then expanding out in to the UK and the possible into Europe and north America.

Evalution question 2

How does your media product represent particular groups?
Generally women are seen as the weaker sex and in movie will play a damsel in distress role which evebtually a man will thien come and save her. In our movie we represent women as strong character but that does still not lack femininity this very much so challenges the stereotypical representation of a female in the media. Our character is very similar to Tomb raider's Lara croft were women are represented in the same view. Our character is supposed to be another of the many victims of the serial killer but she is rather cunning and in fact is able to turn the table on him so she is then the killer rather than the killed. In Lara croft she can instantly be looked at and you will see she is a strong woman whereas our character look like she is easily going to fall victim to the serial killer's ways. Lara croft has many similarities to are character in the fact that she use her feminist as a strength instead of a weakness and they both challenge the ideas that once a woman has feeling for a man she cant hurt him but make the male protagonist fall into this role as he
seems to fall for her and can't kill her. A difference between our to character and Lara croft is that ours wears are hair down compared to Lara croft who has hers tired back taking away some of her femininity

13.4.10

Evualation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Titles

After our research we found that titles are a key part of any movie the font the size all of this should be thought about as is does play a role in how interested the audience will be. Our movie being a action thriller you will notice that movie within a similar catergory will have similar titles. movies such as james bond and the batman keep an element of excitement when the title is introduced, in our film we tried to use this same techniques by making the title swerve towards the audience and with use of the blood splatters we were able to connote murder aswell much similar to the batman title which both can be seen below.

How the plot is established
James bond title sequence is expectional good and establishing the narritive as it is how women fighting and guns and all of these elements come up within movie. Much like our own title sequence we try to incorporate as many of the elements of the movie in to the opening sequence whilst still keeping the movies enigma code. Our movie is about a serial killer who seduces women, whereas as james bond is about a man killing off his enemy usaully with a pistol. both of the picture below show this respectively in my title sequences the male protagonist is in an intimate moment with a women showing the seduce side of the killer. In james bond he's shooting his gun introducing his character to the audience

Setting and location

The location of the movie is important for any movie as it can make the movie more believable or less and also it can help the audience relate to the movie. Our movie was shot inside the tv studio meaning that location have to be fabricated and to countiue with the current look of our film we made of setting an animated city. This was typical to a a movie of our genre, as action movies seem alot more believable when there in a city because cities are represented in the media as were the most action happens.

Costume

Our title sequence all of the characters were in sillohuettes so elborate costumes were not that neccesary there was only really one need for the costume and that was to give our character shape. By this is mean the clothing that they wore had to give them a shape that almost represents them for example the male protagonist wore a suit as he is supposed to be a business and the suit although blockout the audience can still tell. much like the women they had to were titght clothing which represented there feminity sin city also do the same using the shape of a character to represent them. You can see both below.

Editng

Movie within our genre are genrally fast pace movies which capture the audience instantly this si why we had to make sure that our editing was extremly. Although ours in an action thriller is doesn't stick to the usual title of a movie within this genre as it is an extremely slow paced movie and rathaer than jump cut your find our movie fades instead, but to capture the audience we have used elements such making sure there was a lot of mystery in our opening sequence so the audince is constant trying to figure out how this relates. Also we also uses a slight amount of colour this colour mostly being red which connotes danger love passion etc.

How are the characters introduced

Our character are introduced trying to follow the plot of the movie so for example our male protagnist is a man in authority so we show him smoking but then he is also supposed to live a life of a serial killer some we try to make this kinda clear to the audience in the picture below you can see he's following a woman and this instant make the audience ask what is he doing. The characters do not really break the usual convention of the gnre much like some movie such as obessed or charlie angels where women are the stalker or are the one to save the day.

Iconography

iconography is a key element of any movie as it is a clear cut indication of the the genre and also is tell you a lot about the character with out you giving away the naravtive in our movie the male character is seen hold a cigar which can be seen as stereotypical of a man in authority especially as hes sitting down leaning back.

12.4.10

Production brief

Opening Sequence
Title: Death On Tuesday
Lenght: 1/2 minutes

Group Members

The group is made up of 3 of us; Me (nathaniel), India and Stephnie. Stephnie and I will be acting as the protagonists in this sequence and India will be director. We all collectively are planning and editing the finished film.

Content Overview

our movie is about a exexcutive business man who lives a double life as a serial killer seducing women until there vunerable and kills them but by the 6 woman which he reachs he soon comes to realsie she not be as easy to kill although looking quite vunerable she is far from, and soon catches on and starts to flip the whole on it head try to kill the serial killer.

Target Audience

we have target a wide range as our movie can not only target teenagers but adults male and female with the woman playing such a strong role many woman as sure to enjoy whereas the men will love this movie also love this movie for the action so this movie has a very wide spectrum but is main focused on the youths rather than adults although it may still bring in that crowd. Our movie will capture the minds of the youth as it is not a thought based movie but instead easy going face adrenaline movie which could really keep the attention of anyone. Teenagers are not phased by gory images because of movies previous so this mean that our movie can be alot less senstive and more real, this is were adult may not enjoy the movie as much teenagers.

Research

We research into prgamme such as dexter although its not a movie it has many elements which our movie takes inspiration from. Also we looked at sin city and the spirit as they both had women which played storng roles who still portray a look of innocence. Google guided us through some other our research aswell as youtube when we look at other movie within our genre.

Representations and Stereotypes

the genral representations of male in the serial killer roles would that they are quite wierd but our movie challenges that by making him quite human and someone who many people will relate to in the audience. the female character is strong and go against all stereotypes.

8.4.10

Influences

sin city was a massive influence on our title sequence and gave us many ideas for our own title sequence

Also the ipod ad play a massive part in our ideas and help us to reach our final idea

rough cut and feedback

Death On Tuesday - Rough cut from Jemma Goulds on Vimeo.

Audience Feedback

Our audience feedback was that is still some sound also that the music has to be very intense and meet the coventions of our genre. theres no establishing shot. we also got told that the effects were extremely good. In addition to this we got told that the match cut is executed very well

Costume and equipment list

Equipment

Video Camera
Tripod
A chair
A piece of paper (rolled up to make a cigar)
A computer
Adobe After effects and Premiere Pro

Costume

our costume was very basic as we were silohuettes it didnt matter that much but they character both had to were clothes which would give them a clear shape. So the male wore suit which connotes his authority and the girl wore a skirt and tight shirt demonstrating her feminity

6.4.10

Preliminary task evaulation

AS preliminary task from Jemma Goulds on Vimeo.

Our premilanary task requjired these this to be done

  • A character opening a door

  • A character crossing a room

  • A character sitting down in a chair, opposite another character

  • Dialogue between characters

  • Match on action

  • The use of a shot/reverse shot

  • Understanding of 180 degree rule

Upon find out this information we started our research going on youtube and finding other preliminary tasks once this was done it became extremly clear what we had to do. our group started constructing a storyboard so we could create a preliminary task that meant our criteria this including deciding on the location and roles. we stumble across many little problems which seemed enormous at the time but using each other it made it much easier to overcome. for example what is a match cut and what is a match on action.

Once all of our research was done it was on to the actual filming because of our planning this became extremly easy to complete in a small amount of time and were able to effective use our school hours. We worked well as a team which meant that we were able to maintain siplicity and reach our goals.

To make our preliminary task better I think although planned very well and working very quickly I think we could have spent more time on some aspects so we could have achieve a better overall end product. Also i think that we could have asked more about the equipment because there are some terrible errors that make our camera work seem very poor at times.

5.4.10

smart targets

S: specific
M: measurable
A: achievable
R: realistic
T: time

Our team didn't find it hard to set targets witht he use our S.M.A.R.T this made is much easier as we could meet up weekly and set targets and outcome problems using all of our abilities. An example our one of our targets: "using keylighting make all characters into silohuettes by the 12th of febuaury". this target is specific as it tell you what is require to be done measurable visually achievable using our editing abilities realistic based on the date it was set and time as it has a deadline.

3.4.10

Treatment

Our intial idea

our first idea was meant to be a horror movie. Our title sequence start in a detention were the student were all boredom and in silence, then our male protaganist write a note and decides to throw it behind himself witht the intention of it being passed to our female protaganist. the teacher is called aways and then has to leave the classroom and as you would expect the students start to become active and lively but our two protaganist decide to leave room into the bathroom were they become much more intimate. By the end of this the female protaganist ends up dead.

We decided to change idea because is lacked mystery, intensity and supsense. Another major problem was acting although with to alevel drama students acting still was a problem.

our new i dea is a action thirller title sequence. For our new title sequence we used silouhettes which meant without trying our title sequence gave off a sense of mystery and questions. our new ideas is focused on a man who seduces women and then eventually kills them, he sucessful had killed over five women but his sixth isn't as easy to kill as she catches on and then the movie become a question of who can kill who first. We found this much easier then our intial idea as we were able to create and sense of action through our music our establishing shot and other elements of the movie.

2.4.10

location reccee

We went through various locations from the start to finishing of our title sequence.
A bathroom

Intially we had a bathroom scene which we planned to do a match cut from using the steam from in the bathroom and the smoke of a burning picture which was meant to part of our intial horror title sequence

Woods/forrest

This was where the burning of the picture was meant to take place and also our killer foolwing the woman.

Our sixth form
we had the ideas of the student being in a detention and then as the teacher left the room we went off to toilets to have a intimate momnent were the female character eventually ends up dead
As we decided on our final idea, we also decided to use our school tv studios as it meant we could manipulate the footage in adode after effects for our desired effect

1.4.10

Character planning

Me I played the male protaganist as we were sillouhettes the shape of the characters were key. So I wore a suit to give my character clear definition when in our title sequence. Also we wanted to give the character a executive and the suit countinued with this theme. The character is serial killer who seduces women the well cut suit connotes all these element which I have mentioned earlier

The female protangonaist stephnie is a young attractive female with long hair and tight fitting clothing which was key for our title sequence as it meant that you could see the protaganist figure. the character was told to keep her hair down as it highlighted her feminity. From the picture you can tell she is a small woman which was also good for title sequence as she is play a victim and the size difference between the two protaganist make this more believable

22.3.10

Soundtrack

As we had decided that music was of the up most importance to our title sequence we wanted to have a personal touch by creating our own music lucky stephnie a member in our group comes from a music background so she decided to create our title sequence using reason 3.0 to create a diiferent and never heard before sound track. The soundtrack was good as it helped to create the genre of the movie.
Here is the final of our soundtrack

01 Death On Tuesday by stephnie-melody

Meetings

Our group organized lots of meetings to dicuss different attributes and elements of our movie this included

Title of the film
This element produced many ideas and as our project was originally set to become a horror movie, some of the titles included were conventional to that theme for example; 'Strikes Once More.' After some discussion we produced the title 'Death On Tuesday'. As this title holds the conventional aspect of death to the horror genre.

Problems with footage
After our teacher watched our movie and gave us feedback it became quite apparent that it was very long and was giving away to much of the movie so we decided to go with a new idea which keep a element of mystery in our movie

To discuss music
One of our most recent meeting was to discuss the music as it would set the genre because our new idea doesnt have dialouge so the music set the genre for the movie.

Production Log

Day 1 feb 1st:We went to the round our 6 form trying to find a place for our movie once we had found our location we started to film in the toilets our intial idea and in this scene the two protagonist myself and stephnie in our intimate scene the problem that we face on this day was the cameras that we were using had small mic which was not very good and this scene required dialouge, so we had to get mic adjacent for the camera to improve the sound once we had done this we attempt mutlipule angles

Day 2 Feb 8th: On our second day we countinued to film finishing the toilet scene then we moved on to the detention scene doin close up on the different the characters in the room.

Day 3 Feb 9th: We meet up after school to do some filming in a local forest but then whilst filming we decided that our idea was much to complicated and was becoming much like a runaway train so decided to use the weekend to think about our sequence

Day 4 feb 12th: After collecting our thoughts we decided to go with a silouhette style which meant we change our location to the tv studio and started filming using varied shots and movements we finished filing very quickly

5.3.10

target audience

terry is a 19 year old boy who loves thrillers he lives in newcastle with his sister and mum he is currently in college and like every boy he likes football, games and girls he says he'll listen to any type of music as long it sounds good to him. His favourite movie is sin city because of the style and all the action hes always watching television if it not sport then he watch E4 of channel 5 because he like the detective programs. I think the movie will appeal to terry because he is a typical boy which likes thrillers.

28.2.10

Change of idea

After watching some title sequence we decide to change our idea to a thiller and to use a silouhette style to make it so your unable to see the characters this then meant that we could keep the mystery of the characters also it meant that the variable effecting our film could now be control such as lighting and sound because of our location.

27.2.10

Idea 1

Our first indea was a horror movie were a a boy and a girl was in a detention together and started throwin notes to each other which were saying to meet in the toilets and then go to the toilets only for the girl to be killed in the toliet but the problem with this idea was that it was very long and it was hard to create an element of mystery and instead it seemed to be who killed her so was unable to capture the interest of the audience

17.2.10

analysis of opening sequence

The Batman

The opening sequence of batman begins quickly capture the audience by exciting them right from the start this is done by a dark cloudy background with a swarm of bat flying along the screen with a high pitched sound of bats, in the distance eventually makes the globally known batman logo. If you have never watched batman, the dark and quite evil look start may confuse you as it would is not typical of a superhero movie to have such a menacing look.

Two children who we straight away assume are protagonist are then introduced playing around with a blurred camera shot with a fast moving pan we watch then running through the gardens. the spped of the pan helps to bring the audience into movie and feel as if they are running with characters. this is key as it create a sense of supense as we are supsecting something on the other side. The children are dressed in general clothes common to children of there age helping the audience identify and possibly relate to the characters.

When Bruce falls into a well the camera then focuses on a dark hole within the well to evoke the same feeling fear of what we are about to see, from the audience we then are alarmed as a swarm of bats fly out at the screen. A high angle shot from the top of the well allows us to understand how far he has fallen.

After this ordeal that he has just gone through we see a close of a new character who we can only assume is an older version of bruce, this then make us think that the previous scene was only a dream which he does later confirm. Bruce then goes on to get up and and get his food walking in foriegn prison he then get is to a fight by using over the shoulder shot we can see as if we as there with bruce which help involve us in the movie. with the use of jump cut is mean that we can then get the feeling of fast pace action constantly switching between views

I think the music or the lack of music is very effective in this title sequence, as many movie music signals when something good obad is about to take place via changes in the music. i think that this title sequences engages you from start to finish with fast pace action constantly, consistently giving us a a high intensity

Juno

the movie starts off with the proganist walking with a massive bottle of Sunny D she then come to a tree were the character changes to a rotoscoped animated version of the same character. straight away we can tell the character attitudes to life with he slouching also she sways the drink as she walks giving a laid back impression. In addition we can tell she's not a typical young teenage girl as she is wear loose fitting quite baggy clothing telling us that she will not be a fashion conscious stereotypical pretty girl.

the tiltle sequences tell us alot about the character, we can tell she is not a serious character and instead she is care-free character. The title sequence also helps us establish the genre is most likely to be a comedy or maybe a rom-com. Also, the animation effect helps keep a young atomosphere intact engaging the target audience.

The soundtrack in the title sequence is very light hearted country style of music which runs with the atmosphere of the title sequence.

In the opening sequence there is a lot of editing that is used to create the final animated effect but I think considering the movies target audience it is suitable as a animated title sequence would not suit and something such as a war drama the name of the actors are all show in a handed drawn style so in follow with the rest of the title sequence.

Through the title squence juo wanders through the streets she almost look lost but instead I think she looks quite happy without a care in the world. I like the techniques used in this sequences and may you some elements in my own title sequence.
